Hammock

As it gets colder outside, I’m trying to hang on to the warm weather as long as possible. This hammock from TING is made entirely from unused, reclaimed nylon seat belts!

Rubitone

The Rubitone concept by Ignacio Pilotto has to be the coolest, nerdiest design idea EVER. I would definitely grab one of these for those times when you need a color palette option with a few flicks of the wrist.

A hundred years ago....

The year is 1908.
One hundred years ago.

Here are some statistics for the Year 1908:
· The average life expectancy was 47 years.
· Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.
· Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.
· There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads.
· The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
· The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower!
· The average wage in 1908 was 22 cents per hour.
· The average worker made between $200 and $400 per year.
· A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.
· More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME.
· Ninety percent of all doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Instead, they attended so-called Medical Schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND the government as 'substandard. '
· Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.
· Five leading causes of death were:
o Pneumonia and influenza
o Tuberculosis
o Diarrhea
o Heart disease
o Stroke
· The American flag had 45 stars.
· The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was only 30!!!!
· There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.
· Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write.
· Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.
· Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacists said, ‘Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health.'
· Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help.

I got this on my email this week... hard to imagine where are we going....

Calendreco

Calendreco is a perpetual wall calendar composed of one oversized board with the month’s numbers (1 - 31) and three additional headers with different weekday combinations. Depending on the month, the corresponding header is placed in front of the board to indicate the date. With one simple adjustment every month, the calendar can be used year after year.

Bernabei freeman

Lighting has got to be one of my serious obsessions in home decor. I especially love pieces that reflect the light in beautiful ways. These pieces from Australian Bernabeifreeman are simply stunning. With industrial design and lighting backgrounds, I love their use of industrial materials to produce really striking and feminine pieces.

Swims

SWIMS makes beautiful and simple galoshes. The City Slipper is their brand new galoshe for high heel shoes - the first product of its kind.

Some fun facts:
- Extra traction for slippery surfaces
- The sole of each CitySlipper has the map of either New York, Paris or Tokyo
- Pull on/off grip and the soft siliconpad on the sides makes it very convenient
- Flexible design to fit almost any heel height and thickness due to flexible material and construction

What do you think?

VAST chair

The VAST chair consists of two interlocking elements: a plywood panel and an aluminium plate with a layer of foam on top. There are no screws, glue, or bolts. Therefore, it is easy to assemble and easy to transport.

Led Light Bulb

Offering remarkable design in eco-friendly packages has always been offset by fundamental problems. Luckily, innovators like Frog Design recognize that some compromises must be made when introducing a revolutionary replacement for a household product.

Their new LED light bulb is a phenomenal fusion of new technology and old design. While the bulb itself will accommodate any current incandescent lamp or socket, the light source is LED (light-emitting diode), removing the polluting factor of compact fluorescents. The best part: will last up to 30 years.

Moving Color

Moving Color glass tiles are just plain cool. They come in a few different designs, including tye dye. The tiles can be installed in any interior room and change colors with heat exposure, so they’re ideal for showers.

Tree Pods

Want to view the world from a bird’s perspective? Try spending the night in a Tree Pod. The spheres are a one-space design made of wood and fiberglass. They suspend from the trees - more details on the suspension mechanisms are on the website. The spheres can even have power if there is access to electricity nearby. This is a super cool alternative to plain old camping.
